Ikat cloth
1950 - 1980
Horses are one of the most common motifs found on Sumbanese ikats. They are a symbol of wealth. In addition Sumba has a long history of headhunting that died out in the 1930s. The Sumba islanders would mount heads on trees to scare off enemies and also to bring prosperity to the village.
