It was excavated in Xinjiang by Aurel Stein in the early 20th century.This fragment was given by Mortimer Wheeler the then director of the Archaeological Service of India between 1944-1947 to Robert Charleston officer in the British army in India and the future curator of glass at the V&A in London.
