Airborne 0822 from Amifontaine tasked to destroy a metal bridge spanning the Albert Kanaal. Shot down in flames by Flak, and crashed near the bridge. For his outstanding courage in leading his section through the curtain of enemy fire, F/O Garland and his Observer, Sgt Gray, were awarded the first air VCs of the war.
